Al Sadd will take on Oceania champions Sydney University at the Duhail Complex in Doha tomorrow, the opening day of the IHF Super Globe handball tournament which brings together some of the top club teams of the world.
The tournament is being played on a knockout basis and tomorrow’s four matches constitute the quarter-finals. The semi-finals will be held on Saturday followed by the final on Monday.
Also tomorrow, Esperance Sportive take on Barcelona, Macedonian side RK Vardar play Iran’s Naft and Gaz Gachsaran, and defending champions Fuchse Berlin of Germany take on Pan American champions EC Pinheiros of Brazil.
Al Sadd are aiming to replicate their past form in the tournament, which they won in 2002 and came second twice in 2010 and 2014, and third in 2012.
The tournament is being held in Doha for the eighth straight time.
The Qatar Handball Association (QHA) officially formed the Organising committee for the event under the leadership of the QHA President Ahmad al-Shaibi. The committee includes Mohamed al-Jaber, Tournament Director, Khalifa Tayseer alJassim, Head of Sports Operations Committee, Adel al-Anzi, Head of Financial Committee, Hamad Mesfer al-Naimi, Head of Support and Coordination Committee, Nasser Shahin al-Kaabi, Head of Protocol Committee and Abdullah Taleb al-Marri, Head of Media Committee.
Meanwhile, The Qatar Handball Association will also hold the three-nation Qatar Men’s Youth International Friendly Handball Championship to be staged on the sidelines of the 2017 IHF Super Globe from August 25 to 28.
The championship will feature the participation of three teams including Oman, Iran and hosts Qatar. The opening match will be held tomorrow, in which Iran will clash with Oman.
The Qatari squad will include Hassanain Aziz, Ahmad Mohamed al-Sulaiti, Jassim Jabor  al-Sulaiti, Ahmad Abdullah al-Kharousi, Belal bin Masoud, Talal Mohamed al-Darwish, Hamad Mohamed al-Saadi, Saifaldin Nasser Salim, Khalid Saif, Ibrahim al-Hitmi, Nasser Mohamed al-Kubaisi, Ali Medhat Abdulhadi, Hassan Basheer Mohamed, Abdullah Mohamed al-Sharqawi, Abdulrahman Maher Hassan, Abdullah al-Dosari and Thenyan Khalifa.
