The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has opened the southern part of Doha Express Highway and Hamad Port Road, two key roads designed to further improve traffic flow in the southern areas of Qatar.

The new roads form vital parts of Qatar’s expressway network and road projects, including those serving Al Wakra, Al Wukair and Al Mashaf, according to Ashghal.

The event was attended by HE the Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Seif Ahmed al-Sulaiti, HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi, and Ashghal president Dr Saad bin Ahmad al-Muhannadi, along with a number of senior officials of relevant authorities and institutions.

“The opening the southern part of Doha Express Highway and Hamad Port Road is a great addition to land transportation in Qatar,” al-Sulaiti said.

He noted that these roads will contribute in enhancing traffic movement between Al Wakra and Doha, and between Mesaieed, Hamad Port and the Industrial Area, and connect south of the country with the north.

Al-Sulaiti thanked Ashghal for accelerating the construction of these projects and opening them on schedule.

The southern part of Doha Express Highway and Hamad Port Road, which opened to traffic completely in both directions, will serve the southern areas that are characterised by their population density, in addition to their association with the transportation to and from Hamad International Airport, Hamad Port, Industrial Area and others, Ashghal noted.

The 11km highway includes the main carriageway in both directions, in addition to parts of the five interchanges of the project such as access and exit ramps to enable road users from accessing and exiting the new road and surrounding areas.

The new road will provide direct access from the southern areas of the country to the northern areas and vice versa.

The southern part of Doha Express Highway will also relieve the pressure on Al Wakra Main Road, reducing traffic congestion in the area by providing a five-lane highway in each direction, connecting the south and north of the city. There are also ongoing procedures to connect it with the northern part of the Doha Express Highway.

Meanwhile, all four lanes in each direction of Hamad Port Road opened to traffic, a 14km road linking Hamad Port with G-Ring Road.

Al-Rumaihi said the two new roads will serve the populated southern areas, in addition to its association with traffic movement to and from Hamad International Airport, Hamad Port and Industrial Area, and others.

“The consecutive openings that the expressway network is witnessing recently show Ashghal’s commitment to finish projects on time,” he stressed.
