The economic blockade imposed by the Saudi-led bloc failed to have its desired effect on the apparel business in Qatar as robust spending by the residents of the country boosted demand.
The demand for apparels at many retail outlets in Qatar, including well-known branded ones, has been increasing even during the current “off-peak period”, it is learnt.
Speaking to Gulf Times, an employee of a boutique at a major mall in Doha said they are getting a steady flow of shoppers who buy in big quantities and look for new designs and comfortable materials.
“In Qatar, people would surely patronise your product if it is of high quality. They won’t hesitate to spend more for such items,” he stressed. “Earlier, one customer spent more than QR3,000 only for shirts and we haven’t launch any promotions yet.”
He added that they were able to meet their monthly target last month, citing that many residents continued to shop even during weekdays.
Asked about the impact of the economic blockade, imposed by the Saudi-led bloc, on their business, he said it “slightly affected” their sales for a while but this was immediately compensated by the “robust spending of residents”.
An employee of another boutique echoed this view, saying they keep requesting for more stocks from their branch at a different mall due to the increasing demand for some collections and designs.
However, she said the only challenge is having enough stocks. “We expect delivery soon and hope to display all our summer collections such as light shirts and shorts for all ages,” the employee noted.
The boutique was also expected to offer special promotions and discounts to attract more shoppers.
At another mall, shoppers are taking advantage of the discounts and special packages offered as part of Qatar Summer Festival (QSF) 2017, organised by Qatar Tourism Authority.
Retailers at Al Khor Mall, Doha Festival City, The Mall, Gulf Mall, Mall of Qatar, Lagoona Mall and Landmark Mall are offering 50% discounts and special promotions.
For every QR200 spent at any of the participating outlets in these malls, shoppers can enter the mega raffle draw to be held on the final day of QSF (September 5) and have a chance to win one of 10 cash prizes or a super luxury car.
“Many shoppers buy in bulk, mostly for all members of the family,” said a salesperson at a popular clothing brand. “We were actually surprised to know that we get a lot of customers at this time of the year.”
Many of these shops and boutiques are also known for their customer service, giving outright refunds and accepting item exchanges or returns.
She pointed out that some categories of shoppers spend a lot of money during off-peak periods, looking for new collections and designs.
“Promotions and discounts help boost sales but it all boils down to the quality of the products and services you give to your customers,” a manager said.
