Mwani Qatar (Qatar Ports Management Company) has signed an agreement to buy two ships for containers and general cargo transport from a group of Malaysian companies.

The agreement to this effect was signed in the presence of Qatar's Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim Saif Ahmed al-Sulaiti and other senior officials of Mwani Qatar and representatives of some of the Malaysian companies in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The 68 and 64 metres long vessels will be handed over to Qatar over the next few months.
On the occasion al-Sulaiti, who is also chairman of Mwani Qatar, said: “The agreement contributes to boosting economic co-operation with Malaysian companies in a way that backs the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.”
The agreement represents a key turning point for Mwani Qatar, said the minister. He said besides managing ports, wharfs, dry ports, container terminals and cruise and passenger ship terminals, Mwani Qatar will own the new ships, and will manage them for the interest of the national economy and in support of the domestic efforts to promote Qatar’s competitiveness in its preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“We well know the amount of responsibility that we shoulder to ensure local market stability and the support for sustainable development efforts. For this, we have put a clear strategy with the aim of enabling our ports to become integrated economic entities that support and boost the national economic sustainability and contribute to achieving the goals of transforming Qatar into a vibrant business hub in the region,” said al-Sulaiti.
Captain Abdulla al- Khanji, CEO of Mwani Qatar, said that the two ships would be built under the supervision of NK, a Japanese classification forum, which is one of the internationally recognised societies in the shipping field. This, he said, is being done to ensure that the ships meet world standards and specifications.
Captain al-Khanji also confirmed that the two ships would be equipped with the latest technological systems as Mwani Qatar always accords environment, security and safety top priority in all its activities.
The Malaysian companies that will build the two ships, al -Khanji said, are recognised in the shipbuilding industry with long expertise in the field. They also have a great market share in global shipbuilding industry .
