The International Civil Aviation Organisation (Icao) Council has decided to hold two more meetings this month to study Qatar’s file on the effects of the blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia and its allies.
A decision to this effect was taken after the Council considered the case yesterday and listened to Qatar officials who briefed the world body on the impact of the siege on aviation, air safety and security.
Following this, the Council decided to extend the duration of the session to July 6, when a meeting will be held at the Icao Regional Office to discuss the technical file of Qatar. This will be followed by another meeting, also in July, at the headquarters of the organisation in Montreal to find legal solutions to the technical file submitted by Qatar.
The Council, composed of 36 member states elected for a three-year term, is a permanent body of the organisation. All major geographic areas of the world are represented on the Council.
The Council has numerous functions, including acting as an arbiter between member states on matters concerning aviation and the implementation of the provisions of the convention; it may investigate any situation which presents avoidable obstacles to the development of international air navigation and, in general, it may take necessary steps to maintain the safety and regularity of international air transport. HE the Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Seif Ahmed al-Sulaiti has lauded the role played by the Icao.
