A 14km road linking Hamad Port with the Industrial Area has been opened partially to traffic, Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has said.
The vital link, a part of the under construction massive New Orbital Highway and Truck Route project, provides a direct road connection from the Hamad Port road to Doha through G-Ring Road.
Only the four northbound lanes from Hamad Port to the Industrial Area have been opened while the southbound lanes are expected to be ready within the next two months.
Ashghal is keen on accelerating work since the new route forms a direct connection between Hamad Port and Industrial Area. It is expected to enhance the movement of goods and materials.
Hamad Port Road will provide commuters with a shortcut route to the Industrial Area than Al Kharrara and Al Wakra roads and is expected to reduce travel time by more than 15% between Hamad Port and the Industrial Area.
The new road extends from Mesaieed Road to East Industrial Street, and combined with the recently opened underpass on East Street 33 interchange (formerly Al Watan Roundabout). It will establish an almost entirely free-flowing connection between Hamad Port and Salwa Road.
Ashghal is currently constructing three free-flowing interchanges on Hamad Port Road. Once complete, the interchanges will enhance connectivity from the new highway to local towns such as Wukair, and other expressways in the area, including the recently opened G Ring Road, East Industrial Street and Industrial Area Road.
Ashghal’s expressway department manager Youssef al-Emadi said the authority expedited the construction of linking road from Hamad Port Road to Doha via G-Ring Road and the Industrial Area, thanks to the progressive significance of the hub, providing further relief to the people of Al Wakra and Wukair. It will enable Qatari businesses to more effectively transport goods and materials from the south to Doha.
“The link road from Hamad Port Road to Doha via G-Ring Road and the Industrial Area will help to relieve congestion on Al Kharrara Road and Al Wakra Road and improve the flow of traffic in the south,” he said.
“This partial opening is the first of multiple highways that will be open to public use over the summer period.
“Construction works on the Al Wakra bypass and New Orbital Highway and Truck Route are progressing ahead of schedule, and Ashghal expects to open key sections of these two expressways within the next weeks.”
Hamad Port Road forms a major component of the construction works that are being implemented as part of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route.
Upon completion, New Orbital Highway will reduce the travel time between Mesaieed and Al Khor by more than one hour, enabling heavy vehicles to travel efficiently between Hamad Port and Mesaieed in the south to Al Khor in the north as well as other key business and residential hubs such as the Industrial Area, Salwa Road, Al Rayyan and Lusail, without the need to travel through Doha city.
