Prices of a number of varieties of fish has remained at 'affordable levels' in the main market of at Umm Slal while they continue to be high at most of the retail markets, except stalls at some of the hypermarkets, it is learnt.

The local availability of fish has also increased as the catch has gone up in the last few days, according to the sources in the fish businesses.
Usually there is not so great demand for fish during the second half of the holy month of Ramadan as most of the residents prefer meat.
As the transportation of fish to Saudi Arabia is not possible now, more quantities are available in the local markets.
Some of the wholesale suppliers as well as the retail vendors said the price is by and large "affordable" as more quantities are locally available. "If there were adequate quantities of imports of certain varieties of fishes from across the border, the prices would have certainly fallen further," said Ismail, a local trader at the new fish market at Umm Slal.
Sardines and similar cheaper varieties usually come in large quantities from Oman and Iran. However, no fish from the two countries are available for sale these days.
Though imported mackerel (QR25/kg) and sardines (QR17-20/kg) from India are sold at some of the outlets, there is not much demand for the two varieties.
King fish is available for QR25/kg and the price is expected to stay at this level for a few days. Usually there is a stronger demand for Hamour during this time of the year and yesterday it was traded for prices between QR60 and QR65/kg.
Bedha, which is in good demand locally, was traded yesterday in the range of QR15 and QR25/kg. Zubeidi (QR20/kg) and Sheri (QR10/kg) too are available in large quantities.
