Ramadan Iftar tents across Qatar, organised by various individuals and charities, have seen an increasing turnout of visitors, especially from among low-income expatriate single workers. Though the tents receive visitors of different nationalities a short time ahead of the sunset prayers, preparation of the food always start some hours earlier.
For instance, Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) has set up 35 Iftar tents in areas with high concentrations of expatriate workers. One of these tents at the workers’ city receives as many as 2,000 visitors and provides them with a quality breakfast every sunset on a daily basis.
Dr Mohamed Rashid al-Marri, director of RAF community service department, pointed out that RAF tents receives around 17,500 visitors a day throughout Ramadan, providing them with the sunset meal free of charge regardless of their background.
In addition to the fixed Ramadan tents, RAF provides Iftar packages at six main intersections within Doha for those on the road at the time of Iftar. The target is to distribute around 36,000 meals throughout the month at a rate of 1,200 meals a day.
Another project by RAF during Ramadan includes providing Iftar for four different Asian community representatives, diplomats and their families and community members, every Friday at Al Arabi Club. The targeted communities are the Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi and the Nepalese, providing more than 7,500 meals.
For needy families, RAF provides 600 Ramadan packages, including the main food items, required during the month. Meanwhile, Qatari families are provided encouragement and support throughout the month as they are engaged to prepare and supply the meals served at RAF Iftar tents.
Other charities officials pointed out that they have provided adequate Iftar tents and supported other similar charity projects, financed by a number of donors who have been doing so throughout the previous years. Some of the new donors and philanthropists have expressed their desire to finance more Iftar tents at some locations of their choice but this was not possible owing to logistical issues. Besides the available tents are considered sufficient to serve the targeted people.
Each tent has a number of supervisors and workers who help in the orderly distribution of food.
