At least four militants and three soldiers were killed in a gun battle that erupted after a group of rebels tried to infiltrate the Line of Control that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, officials said on Monday.
The clash began on Saturday when troops spotted the movement of militants near the Naugam frontier area, 135 kilometres north of state capital Srinagar.
Indian army officials said the fighting lasted for 36 hours until Sunday night, and the insurgents were killed before they could infiltrate into the Indian side from Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
"Infiltration bid by terrorists in the Naugam sector, Kashmir valley has been successfully foiled. Nation is proud of our soldiers," Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said on Twitter.
"In the Naugam operation our soldiers killed 4 terrorists & foiled their evil design. Tributes to our 3 martyred soldiers".
The incident comes amid growing tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours. New Delhi repeatedly accuses Pakistan of sheltering militants and helping them cross over to carry out attacks in India-administered Kashmir.
Islamabad denies the charges and describes the militants as freedom fighters.
