A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced an expatriate man in absentia to one year in jail and subsequent deportation for stealing some pieces of gold jewellery from a shop.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported that the issue started when the defendant entered a jewellery and asked to see some pieces of jewellery but eventually did not buy anything.
Shortly after the man left, the manager of the shop called the police reporting that some pieces were stolen by the man according to the recording of the surveillance camera. Police managed to catch the man before he could leave the area and he admitted the theft and returned the jewellery to the shop asking not to be prosecuted, but the case was taken to the court and he did not attend the court hearings.
