There has been a spurt in the number of new eateries in city areas such as Najma, Mansoura and other places. A few more are also expected to open in these localities in the near future, say sources. After the municipal authorities carried out extensive inspections at eateries in some places about a couple of years ago, many residents of these areas faced difficulties and were left with only a handful of dining options.
The civic action led to closures as well as imposition of fines, according to the sources.
Some of the restaurants that were ordered to temporarily close – and also made to pay penalties for their violations – were again in the news months later for flouting norms and fined during inspections.
While some eateries were affected by temporary closure orders, others folded up due to “financial or other reasons”, according to sources. Now, the situation is changing and new restaurants have mushroomed in Najma, Mansoura and other parts of Doha.
For instance, at least three new eateries – located close to each other – have opened in Najma over the last month and four more are set to start functioning in their vicinity soon.
The busy Bin Dirham Street next to Mansoura and Najma, too, has seen the opening of a number of eateries in the past year and more are expected to open in the coming weeks.
Another street on the northern side of Airport Street in Najma has witnessed a similar rise in the number of eateries. However, some old restaurants there also went out of business.
Similarly, the road running eastwards from the Al Kaabi roundabout in Mansoura has seen the opening of new restaurants in recent months.
On the contrary, localities such as Al Thumama face a “dearth of eateries” despite a sharp rise in the number of residents.
