India on Wednesday summoned Pakistan's envoy Abdul Basit and demanded action against Pakistani troops it claimed killed and mutilated two of its soldiers in the disputed region of Kashmir.
Islamabad has refuted India's allegations that Pakistani forces on Monday killed the soldiers and disfigured their bodies at the Line of Control (LoC), a de facto border that divides the region of Kashmir into two parts.
Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar conveyed India's "outrage" at the barbaric incident to Basit, foreign office spokesman Gopal Baglay said.
"The government demands that Pakistan take immediate action against its soldiers and commanders responsible for this heinous act."
New Delhi told Pakistan it was significant that the attack was preceded by cover fire from Pakistani posts.
"Blood samples of the Indian soldiers collected and the trail of blood clearly shows that the killers returned across the LoC," Jaishankar told Basit, according to the statement.
The Pakistani Army had on Tuesday asked India to offer proof to back up its claims, adding that the allegations were an attempt to divert attention from the growing protests inside India-controlled Kashmir.
Top military commanders of India and Pakistan spoke on the hotline on Tuesday after India warned that the army will exact revenge.
