Qatar’s Zhu Chen claimed the gold medal in chess at the GCC Women’s Games being held in Doha. The fifth edition of the championship kicked off last week and will go on till March 17.
Amna al-Naoman of United Arab Emirates finished second ahead of her compatriot Norah Saleh, who settled for third place.
On the other hand, Qatari basketball team recorded a 58-56 hard-fought victory over Bahrain. Hosts Qatar lead the standings with 52 medals including 16 gold, 19 silver, and 17 bronze medals.
In the bowling competitions held at the Qatar International Bowling Center, Bahrain’s Norah Sulan clinched gold,  Oman’s Shakila al-Esairi took sliver, while the bronze medal went to Oman’s Aysha al-Shaybani. The Qatari squad included Lalwa Abdullah, Al Danah al-Sulaiti and Haya Abdullah.
Qatar to participate in Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria
Qatar will participate in the 11th Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria, which will kick-off from Friday and continue until 25 March. The competitions will see the participation of 3,000 athletes from 110 countries, including 15 Arab countries, namely Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Syria.
The Qatari delegation will head to the Austrian city of Graz today to participate in the Games, which will be held in four cities: Graz, Schladming, Ramsau, and Rohrmoos. Qatar will take part in speed skating snowboarding in Ramsau. The delegation is headed by Executive Director of Qatar Special Olympics Amir al-Mulla along with Sarah al-Dosari. Abdullah Nasser al-Mannai, Saud al-Sulaiti, Khalifa al-Dosari and Mohamed Jaber al-Bahih will represent Qatar and will be accompanied by coaches Ali Hdaib and Hatem Bedier.
