Al Wakra and Umm Slal Health Centres under the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) carried out various activities to celebrate World Cancer Day recently.
The events aimed to raise awareness and increase local knowledge about cancer, providing information regarding its causes and the importance of early detection and treatment.
The health centres dedicated a group of teams, including social workers, nurses and medical staff, to present one-to-one advice and lectures on early detection, diagnosis and long-term referrals.
Dr Maysoon al-Hakeem, family medicine consultant at Al Wakra Health Centre, provided information on different types of cancer, how to spot symptoms, causes and consequences, as well as the possibility of periodic tests at PHCC health centres.
Health educator Awatef Ahmad introduced methods of self-examination, emphasising the need to consult a doctor if any relevant symptoms are spotted.
Dr Nasseema Hussain, family medicine consultant in Al Wakra Health Centre, presented a lecture focused on cervical cancer reinforcing that early detection can prevent this cancer.
The early detection of breast and bowel cancer programme is a life-saving one, based on regular detection and promotes awareness about the importance of early detection of cancer. “Early detection for a healthy life” programme came in the framework of the National Programme of Cancer, in conjunction with the National Health Strategy 2011-2016.
