The month-long Shop Qatar festival 2017 concluded on Tuesday night with a QR1mn mega draw, traditional performances, and a free concert by renowned singer Majed al-Muhandes at Mall of Qatar (MoQ).
The grand finale saw a lady winning the QR1mn jackpot prize and 14 other winners took home cash prizes, as shoppers and mallgoers waited around the Oasis stage.
Shop Qatar’s finale showcased ardha and dabke performances. A number of mascots and roving performers also greeted and entertained visitors while al-Muhandes’ regaled the crowd with heart-warming songs after the mega draw.
It is learnt that the last weekend of the festival witnessed a surge in footfall at different participating malls, as well as a substantial increase in sales at retail outlets.
“The success of Shop Qatar has given us a great start for 2017, and we look forward to maintaining this momentum with the eighth edition of the Qatar International Food Festival which will take place later this quarter,” Qatar Tourism Authority’s (QTA) chief marketing and promotion officer Rashed al-Qurese said in a statement.
Besides the close collaboration of tourism partners with QTA, he also lauded their efforts to enrich the festival’s offering and for providing a platform for authentic Qatari innovations.
Al-Qurese expressed confidence that Shop Qatar will continue to expand in the next editions aimed at reinforcing the country’s position as a top destination for shoppers and families.
From January 7 to February 7, the festival featured shopping promotions, outdoor activities, live entertainment, beauty and fashion events, musical performances and comedy acts to provide residents and visitors with a diverse offering.
QTA introduced the annual shopping festival following the notable recent growth of Qatar’s retail sector, matched by its strong contribution to tourism spending.
According to the draft Tourism Satellite Account, shopping represented a bigger portion of tourism spending in 2014 than hotel bookings or food and beverage, generating QR6bn.
In a statement, QTA noted that small businesses had the opportunity to showcase their products through the 30 pop-up shops across five participating malls.
Products offered at these pop-up shops are locally designed and produced goods, helped entrepreneurs gain exposure to visitors and residents.
In addition to the pop-up shops, five small and medium enterprises under The Bedaya Centre for Entrepreneurship and Career Development also took part in the outdoor activities on the Doha Corniche in the two weekends of the festival.
The activity included a free screening of episodes of Siraj, Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development’s new 3D animation ‘edutainment’ TV series.
In support of Shop Qatar, Qatar Airways offered 25% discount to all bookings to Qatar (within the GCC region) during the month-long event.
