LexisNexis, a leading provider of legal research information worldwide, has hosted its first awards celebration for the legal community in Qatar.
The event, Qatar Business Law Forum & Awards, was held in Doha recently in partnership with the College of Law at Qatar University, Qatar Foundation and the Association of Corporate Counsel – Middle East. 
Ghada M Darwish Law Firm won the title of Qatar Law Firm of the Year 
for 2016.
The event “witnessed a huge gathering and was a meeting place of eminent dignitaries in the legal field”, according to a statement. It was also a platform for members of Qatar’s legal community to exchange innovative ideas pertaining to legal development in the country.
The gathering was formally inaugurated by Professor Khawar Qureshi, who established the McNair Law Chambers in Qatar in 2008, as Lexis announced him the ‘master of ceremony’.
The award function was followed by a gala dinner, which was marked by the presence of hundreds of legal decision makers.
The competition was open to Qatari and international law firms with at least one office in Qatar that carries the branding of that firm. It extended to legal departments and in-house lawyers based in Qatar.
The winners of the awards are as follows: International Law Firm of the Year – White & Case LLP; Qatar Law Firm of the Year – Ghada M. Darwish Law Firm; Property & Construction Team of the Year – Dentons & Co; Banking & Finance Team of the Year – Simmons & Simmons Middle East LLP; Alternative Dispute Resolution Team of the Year – K&L Gates LLP; Employment Team of the Year – Clyde & Co; Legal Counsel of the Year – Dr Akram Saad (Contraco); General Counsel of the Year: Sheikh Ali bin Jabor al-Thani (Ooredoo); Legal Department of the Year (Large Team) – Sidra Medical and Research Center; and Legal Department of the Year (Small Team) – Qatar Financial Centre.
A law conference was held in the morning session related to the topics of arbitration & dispute resolution, labour & immigration law and also cybercrime & data protection.
