Swedish freestyle ski cross racer Anna Holmlund is in a stable condition on Tuesday, a day after head surgery following a training fall in Italy.

Holmlund was in ‘an induced coma and her vital signs were stable,’ Swedish ski cross team sports chief Joar Batelson told dpa after being informed on her condition by doctors.

The 29-year-old sustained a head injury during training in Innichen on a relatively easy section of the course.

Batelson added that he had not heard of any plans for a new operation. For the time being, she will remain in the induced coma ‘to allow the body to recuperate,’ he said.

‘The fall was a case of really bad luck,’ he added.

Holmlund won an Olympic bronze at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi and the overall world cup last season. She is second in the overall standings this year behind American Devin Logan.

In ski cross, four skiers start simultaneously and race side by side over a specially constructed course with jumps, waves and sharp turns.
