Dozens of Jordanians took to the streets of Amman yesterday, protesting against a recent deal to import gas from Israel, the independent Jordanian Al-Ghad newspaper reported online.
The protesters gathered following mid-day prayers and chanted slogans against the $10bn deal signed last month, according to the report.
Some demonstrators chanted “gas of the enemy means occupation”; “the people want to overthrow the agreement”; and “no to normalisation with the Zionist entity” — a reference to Israel. No violence was reported.
Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994.
However, anti-Israel sentiment has not abated in the desert kingdom, which has a strong opposition movement.
Jordan is home to thousands of Palestinian refugees, many of whom hold Jordanian citizenship.
