A Canadian university student, detained on suspicion of having links to a deadly July cafe attack in the Bangladeshi capital, has been freed on bail, officials said on Monday.

Tahmid Hasib Khan, a student of Toronto University, was released from Dhaka Central Jail after a court granted him bail on Sunday, prison official Jahangir Alam told reporters.

Twenty civilians, 17 of whom were foreign nationals, were killed after Islamist militants attacked Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka's Gulshan diplomatic area on July 1.

Five militants, a chef who was believed to be an associate of the attackers and two police officers were also killed during a commando operation following the attack.

Khan was arrested on August 3. Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo reported that Khan was released as no links to the attack were found during the investigation.

Police have killed at least 14 suspected militants, including a Bangladeshi-born Canadian man, in the last three months as part of counter-terrorism raids launched after the cafe attack.
