The activities will take place from June 10-24.
A statement issued by AZF said the programme introduces a “package of varied and exclusive sport events” as part of the Ramadan Sports Festival, a wide range of cultural activities in the traditional village, Freej Aspire, and a select number of religious sermons and lectures offered in partnership with Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF).
Abdullah Aman al-Khater, chairman of the Ramadan Organising Committee at AZF, said: “The foundation is offering events for everyone during Ramadan, including men, women, children and persons with special needs. All members of the community are welcome to get involved.”
AZF will hold 13 sport competitions for all ages and categories this year to stress the importance of exercising and physical activity throughout the year. Male sport competitions will include basketball – featuring 12 teams with eight players per team for five days; football – featuring 16 teams with 15 players per team for eight days; volleyball and beach soccer.
The foundation has also dedicated three days to tennis competitions for adult and young women, as well as a junior futsal competition and two tournaments for AZF staff in futsal for males and volleyball for females. The multi-purpose hall in Aspire Dome will also host a table tennis tournament in three categories for persons with special needs.
The statement noted that the success of the past four editions of the Ramadan Sports Festival has driven AZF to increase the number and type of sports activities offered, which now include rugby, cricket and remote-controlled car racing. The rugby tournament will witness the participation of eight teams (10 players each), while the cricket tournament will see six teams (nine players each) battle it out over two days.
Registration for the Ramadan Sports Festival begins on May 5 and continues until the end of the month. Tournaments will take place every day from 9.30pm until midnight and winners will be awarded prizes of varying values.
AZF will also organise, for the second consecutive year, Freej Aspire, giving visitors a chance to experience and enjoy Qatari traditions.
Freej Aspire is situated in the Mehairja area, behind the Aspire Printing Press building, and will be open from June 10-19. It will conclude with a celebration of Garangao night.
The foundation will also host, for the third consecutive year and in collaboration with RAF, the Bashaer Al-Rahma Ramadan programme, which entails a series of Ramadan evenings and religious lectures from some of the well-known Islamic clerics.
