Qatar Sports Club have been relegated to the Qatargas League for the first time in their history following a 1-1 draw with Al Wakrah yesterday evening. Daniel Carando’s header in the 54th minute wasn’t enough for Sebastio Lazaroni’s side to claw their way out of trouble despite Al Kharaitiyat losing 3-2 to Umm Salal.
The Kings showed their attacking intent as early as the first minute. Carrando’s snap shot from outside the box was comfortably taken by Hassan Dicho in the Wakrah goal. Qatar SC slowly grew in confidence in the first half, but lacked the killer instinct in front of goal.
Indeed Carrando was guilty of missing two golden opportunities to put his side in the lead in the space of a minute. First a pinpoint free-kick from Vecchio found the Argentine hit-man, but his poked effort drew a good save from Hassan Dicho. A minute later a Shaneen Ali cross fell to Carrando but his tame shot was again claimed by Hassan Dicho.
Midfielder Emiliano Vecchio was pulling the strings in the Kings midfield, with the former Colo-Colo man knocking the ball into the Wakrah box. Unfortunately for him none of his team-mates were on hand to score the vital opener, and the first half ended with honours even at 0-0.
Wakrah came out rejuvenated in the second half and a moment of magic from midfielder Mouhcine Moutouali saw the Blue Waves take the lead in the 51st minute. A swift turn of pace saw the Moroccan attacker breeze past three Kings defenders before a composed finish past stopper Mohamed Mubarak.
Qatar SC sprang into action, and grabbed an equalizer just two minutes later. A superb cross from Vecchio was met by the head of Carrando. His effort crushed onto the underside of the bar, before being bundled in by Hassan Dicho.
With Al Kharaitiyat losing, Qatar SC just needed a winner to confirm their status in the QSL for another season. Lazaroni willed his side on to pour forward in attack, and could have paid dividends had central defender Rafik Halliche been able to stretch a little further and poke the ball into the net from a fine Emiliano Vecchio cross.
Despite pushing forward, the Kings where open on the counter attack, and Argentine striker Sasha could HAVE put the tie to bed had his fierce shot found the back of the net and not rattled the cross-bar.
Increasingly Qatar SC where looking desperate and piled players forward to get that one crucial goal. It proved to be too little too late for the Kings, as the referee blew the final whistle sending Qatar SC to the Qatar Gas League for the 2016/2017 season.
