Hamad Bin Khalifa (HBK) Hospital in Boutilimit, Mauritania, served more than 79,000 people in 2015, according to an annual report of the hospital.
Operated and managed by Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), under a memorandum of understanding with Qatar’s Education Above All (EAA), the hospital engaged 89-member workforce that comprises specialist doctors, nurses, assistants, social workers, and
administrative/services staff.
According to the report, the emergency unit received 13,092 cases, outpatient clinics 47,065 people, recovery departments 5,650 stays, obstetrics and gynaecology 1,255 deliveries, the medical laboratory 41,564 tests, medical imaging department 7,703 X-ray and ultrasound images, and the surgical unit 732 operations.
The hospital focuses on training the students of public health schools in Mauritania. For more than one year till December 2015, 69 medical workers were trained, including 20 nurses, 12 midwives, and 37 social  advisers.
Working towards sustainable and comprehensive professional development of human resources, the hospital held four training courses for the obstetrics and gynaecology staff. The courses were attended by 63 medical and paramedical workers.
The hospital also participated in a two-day medical convoy dispatched by a local charity in Monguel, Gorgol region and another one dispatched by the School of Medicine in Nouakchott. It contributed consultants of various specialties, resident physicians, nurses, and social advisers, with medical equipment and medicines. The team conducted 426 examinations and 45 operations in ENT, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, general surgery, and ultrasound imaging in four days.
Three multispecialty medical missions were sent to three districts of Trarza region, with a group of doctors, medicines, and medical supplies. Lasting for one day each, the three missions accomplished 842 medical consultations in total.
Hamad Bin Khalifa Hospital was established in 2007 under the patronage of HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, formerly through the Qatari-Mauritanian Social Development Foundation, and now through EAA, a global initiative aimed at building an international movement that would contribute to human, social, and economic development by offering good education and other welfare programmes and initiatives.
Since taking the responsibility for operating and managing the hospital, QRC has worked to develop and upgrade it with all main medical departments, including emergency, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, and dentistry, in addition to a pharmacy and outpatient clinics.
