Qatar University’s College of Arts and Sciences (QU-CAS) has announced the launch of the International Science and Football Association event (Isafa), to be held at QU from March 19 to 25.
“A first for an Arab country, this interdisciplinary sporting and science event engages key Qatar institutions and several other partners across the globe,” CAS associate dean for outreach and engagement Dr Khalifa al-Hazaa said.
Senior academics, scientist guest speakers, medical specialists, world football coaches and fitness experts representing different schools, technicians, football practitioners and local and overseas students will attend.
Isafa chair and Qatar Olympic Committee Professorial Chair in Sport Science Programme Dr Monèm Jemni explained that the event will start with a football fitness coaching workshop from March 19 to 23 as part of the Isafa courses to train candidates aiming to gain professional football fitness coaching certificate.
“Key world figures representing several football schools will be providing the course which will be followed by an International Conference in Science and Football on March 24 and 25,” he said.
Dr Jemni also announced that the event will feature a ceremony to award three media figures, who have significantly contributed to football-related coverage.
“There is an award each for print, audio and visual media for 2015-16. Journalists, broadcasters and media specialists are invited to submit a production (written, audio and visual) that has been performed in 2015-16.
“The content of the production should be around football, preferably around the scientific/medical/technical/physical fitness aspects of the game (or footballers) in Qatar.”
The entries, including details of the applicants should be sent to Dr Monèm Jemni at [email protected] no later than March 15. A committee will review the submissions and select the winners. The winners will be announced and the prizes presented on March 18 at 7pm.
QU-CAS Sport Science Programme director Dr Ruben Goebel, Department of Mass Communication acting head Dr Abdulrahman al-Shami, Al Jaish Football Club manager Sabri Lamouchi and Saif Mohamed Abdull lteef al-Naemi from Qatar Olympic Academy were also present at the Isafa event announcement ceremony.
