With funding from Qatar Development Fund (QDF), Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) office in Yemen is proceeding with its major relief intervention launched several months ago to help Yemeni hospitals treat the injured in the recent clashes.
Building upon the successful support of the Surgical Emergency Centre of the Althawra Public Hospital in Taiz, QRCS has signed an agreement with the hospital to extend the urgent surgical intervention to the end of January, just to initiate the second three-month phase.
During the first phase, which lasted  more than three months, the hospital received and treated a total of 12,734 cases, including general surgery (1,789), surgical emergency (1,901), burns and plastic surgery (1,082), burn dressing (941), major surgeries (1,231), minor surgeries (116), recovery (844), dressing (2,445), ICU (548), orthopaedics (1,394), neurology (99), and orthopaedic surgery (344).
Following the success of the emergency centre, which is the largest in Taiz, QRCS extended the contract with the hospital until the end of January. A plan was set for the second phase, which involves the provision of chronic disease medications over three months, at a cost of QR 2.34mn.
The urgent intervention also involves medicines, medical consumables, oxygen, and fuel for Taiz hospitals, at a total cost of QR646,728. There are discussions to find permanent alternatives to secure oxygen in the city.
QRCS is one of the earliest international organisations to work in Taiz, where the fierce siege since April 2015 resulted in depletion of medical supplies, shutdown of hospitals due to lack of fuel, and displacement of medics outside of the country.
According the latest statistics of humanitarian organisations working there, the toll of war in Taiz alone is 1,698 killed and 16,280 injured.
The Chairman of the Al-Thawra Hospital, Dr Ahmed Abdullah Anaam, said: “By virtue of an agreement with QRCS, we established a surgical emergency centre to receive cases 24/7. So far, we have received more than 12,000 cases, performed more than 800 surgeries, and taken care of more than 3,300 dressing cases.”
Dr Anaam emphasised the hospital’s commitment to its humanitarian and professional duties towards all patients and injured people in the governorate. He thanked all the contributors, mainly QDF and QRCS.
