Doha

The newly-built signal-controlled intersection on the Corniche Street between the Emiri Diwan and Qatar National Theatre was opened for traffic on Wednesday.
The new intersection will enable Corniche Street users coming from Al Diwan Intersection towards the National Theatre Intersection to either make left-hand turns onto Al Rumailah Street or U-turns to the other side of the street opposite of Al Corniche Street, without the need to continue until the National Theatre Intersection to make a U-turn.
This will significantly reduce traffic congestion at the National Theatre Intersection, according to an Ashghal statement.
It said the authority's Operations and Maintenance Department completed and opened the intersection to traffic ahead of the schedule as the work was finished in less than five weeks.
The expansion works have also been completed and included the construction of an additional lane on the left side of Al Corniche Street, for a distance of 375m towards the National Theatre Intersection.
This, it is hoped, will enable vehicles to turn left towards Mohamed bin Thani Street by using three lanes instead of the earlier two. The works also included widening of the road and making it three lanes instead of two for a distance of 475m for vehicles coming from Majlis Al Taawon Street and going right onto Mohamed bin Thani Street and right onto Al Corniche Street.
An additional lane was also built on part of Mohamed bin Thani Street heading right towards Majlis Al Taawon Street, to become two lanes instead of one for a distance of 230m. This is in addition to the construction of a new lane on Mohamed bin Thani Street, from its intersection with Majlis Al Taawon Street for a distance of about 50m. The paving and beautification works are being finalised in co-ordination with the Doha Municipality.
