A four-day workshop on occupational health and building safety procedures is being held in Doha, under the aegis of the General Directorate of Civil Defence.
It will conclude today.
The workshop has been organised as part of the fifth Civil Defence Exhibition and Conference, to be held in November. It is being attended by engineers, consultants and representatives of engineering companies and other agencies working in the relevant fields in the country.
The event was inaugurated by Brigadier Aman Saad al-Sulaiti, assistant director, General Directorate of Civil Defence.
He stressed that the culture of safety and community awareness should be spread for the overall safety and protection of workers and the community, adding that the workshop — which deals with numerous issues related to safety measures in buildings, risk assessment and the development of emergency services and response — will contribute a lot towards ensuring work safety.
He noted that the programme has received wide acceptance from establishments working in the area of building safety.
Brigadier Ibrahim Abdul Rahman al-Muftah, director of the Prevention Department at Civil Defence, said the programme will help raise the level of operations in the safety sector as engineers and specialists can benefit from the knowledge and experience of international experts.
Further, he said the knowledge of advanced methods in engineering planning, construction safety and emergency response, as well as safety in the workplace, is one of the most important factors that contribute to the objectives of Civil Defence, especially in light of large-scale construction works taking place in the State.
The workshop sheds light on different aspects of building safety, including safety and security requirements for new and existing buildings as well as the exits required in an ideal building, introduction to emergency lighting in buildings and how it should be distributed, explanation of the fire system for buildings (water sprinkler) and methods of installation. A second workshop on occupational safety and health will be presented by Dr Ossam Hegab, trainer and consultant in occupational safety and health.
The workshop will deal with a number of issues related to occupational health and safety in industrial plants, including health and emergency exits, fire hazards and their causes, curbing electrical and machinery risks and informing employees about hazardous materials, among others.
