Berlin: Olympic discus champion Robert Harting has been named as one of 66 German athletes to go to the world athletic championships in Beijing next month despite not yet being able to compete this year.
“With Robert Harting it has been agreed that he, as an experienced athlete, will decide in the next few days if he is to start in the world championships,” German Athletics Federation (DLV) sport director Thomas Kurschligen said in a statement yesterday.
Harting, 30, is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury suffered last September and will announce on his championship intentions on August 11.
Should he not participate, the German team would be without one of its most decorated athletes. In addition to his Olympic gold in 2012, Harting won world titles in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
The Germans travel to China for the August 22-30 championships with reigning title holders Raphael Holzdeppe (pole vault), Christina Obergfoell (javelin) and David Storl (shot putt) in their squad.
