Andrew C Stevens of Commercial Bank of Qatar was honoured for his enormous contribution to the growth of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters at the tournament’s Pro-Am Dinner held on Tuesday night at The St Regis Doha.
Andrew Stevens, now Adviser to the Board at Commercial Bank, was heavily involved with the long-standing
European Tour event in his former role as Group Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Bank.
Hassan al-Nuaimi, President of the Qatar Golf Association, Keith Waters, Chief Operating Officer of the European Tour and Abdulla Saleh al-Raisi, Chief Executive of Commercial Bank, each presented Stevens with gifts including an Arabic sword, a traditional Qatari gift, and an original painting of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Club House, hospitality pavilion and 18th green at the Doha Golf Club by Graeme Baxter,
the official artist of the PGA and Ryder Cup committees.
“Andrew Stevens was a key part of the growth of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in his role at Commercial Bank and it is only right that he is recognised and honoured for his contribution to this amazing tournament, which has become one of the Middle East’s major sporting events due to Commercial Bank’s continued support.
“And now with Abdulla Saleh al-Raisi driving forward Commercial Bank’s sponsorship, I have no doubt that our partnership will continue to go from strength to strength,” said al-Nuaimi.
Al-Raisi added: “Andy has made an enormous contribution to the successful growth of the tournament over the past decade and there is no doubt that it would not have become the world-class event it is today without his support and commitment.
“On behalf of Commercial Bank, we are delighted to be able to thank him with a unique painting from one of the World’s leading Golf Artists. Commercial Bank look forward to building on very firm foundations to develop the Tournament in the future”.
Commercial Bank is currently title sponsoring the tournament for the 10th straight year and this week announced a three-year extension through to 2018.
Stevens said: “I’m very honoured to have been involved in the organisation of this event for so many years and to watch it grow into not only one of The European Tour’s most prestigious events but also one of Qatar’s sporting and social highlights.”
World No. 2 Henrik Stenson, World No. 5 Justin Rose, World No. 6 and defending champion Sergio Garcia and four-time Major winner Ernie Els were among the guests at Tuesday’s dinner, ahead of their participation in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, which teed off yesterday.
