A youth flashes victory sign in front of Action on Diabetes team while others look on.The public screening of Action on Diabetes’, in its third week, is proving to be a great success as increasing numbers of people turn out to have free diabetes testing.Visitors also receive guidance by professional dieticians. To date, more than 1,100 people have been tested for diabetes as a result of the campaign which was launched in response to disease becoming increasingly common in Qatar. Previously set up in Landmark and City Center malls, a record number of people are expected to visit the screening booth this weekend at Villaggio Mall from 4pm-9pm tomorrow. HMC endorcinology head Dr Mahmoud Zirie said: “Regular screening is paramount as we can help people avoid the onset of diabetes and give relevant health advice.”Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad al-Thani, deputy managing director, Maersk Oil Qatar, commented: “We are extremely pleased with public reaction to the campaign and urge those who have not yet attended, to come along this weekend to get tested at our booth in Villaggio.”Although diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in Qatar, if caught in its earliest stages its development can be prevented. The campaign aims to support the Qatari authorities in raising awareness of diabetes, helping those at risk prevent it and supporting people already living with diabetes manage their health better.
