K C Varghese Foundation, instituted in memory of former Doha resident and president of the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) K C Varghese will give its annual award this year to Doha-based humanitarian worker Abdul Salam at a function to be held on Saturday in the Indian province of Kerala.Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy will be the chief guest at the function. Varghese’s brother and minister for expatriate and cultural affairs K C Joseph will chair the meeting.The award will be given away in Changanacherry - Varghese’s home town. He passed away in Doha on May 26, 2006. At the time of his death Varghese was the assistant advertising manager at the Gulf Times.Abdul Salam, an employee of International Maritime Services, a shipping and logistics firm, has been chosen in recognition of his selfless service over the years in aiding the repatriation of bodies of hundreds of expatriates who died in Qatar. “Scores of families and others have benefited from Salam’s aid,” said a foundation official.An award is also given to a journalist from the Gulf region. This year Sajid Arattupuzha, who works for the Dammam bureau of an English newspaper in Saudi Arabia is the recipient.The foundation will also honour two eminent personalities at the function on Saturday. They are Kerala Legislative Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan and well-known oncologist Dr V P Gangadharan.
