Twenty five student and faculty volunteers representing the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCU-Q) are making a real difference to students during their seven-day trip to Indonesia organised by Reach Out To Asia (Rota).

Supported by Vodafone Qatar, the trip offers a unique service opportunity for undergraduate students to explore and expand their skills.

The group is currently in the middle of their programme and is engaged in a full schedule of teaching, community engagement and cultural activities.  The workshops in book making, Photoshop, jewellery making, fashion design and fashion drawing are popular with the Indonesian students, with over 150 benefitting from the peer-to-peer workshops.

Highlights of the trip include visits to Borododur, a Buddhist temple dating to the 9th century, and the Indoartamiks, a Rota supported programme and co-funded by Vodafone Qatar.

Mohamed Abdulla al-Saleh, community department manager at Rota said:  “Both students and volunteers are having a great time and learning a lot from each other. It is a wonderful experience for everyone involved. Visiting Indonesia provides the volunteers with a wonderful opportunity to develop and enhance important life skills such as communication, empathy and interpersonal relationships.”

Dana Haidan, head of corporate responsibility at Vodafone Qatar said, “At Vodafone Qatar, we believe in the impact that volunteering and community service can have on the personal and professional development of youth which is why we sponsored the Rota Volunteer Programme.”

After returning from Indonesia, the volunteers and supporters will be invited to a reflection event where they will come together to discuss, reflect and share their Indonesia experiences. In addition, VCU-Q and Rota will seek to maintain the momentum of their partnership by exploring opportunities to publicise the volunteers’ trip reflections to their VCU-Q peers and the wider community, as well as advocating for the needs of students in Indonesia through Qatar-based activities.
