All in all,  43 students of Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) were awarded graduating diplomas in international politics, international economics and culture and politics during a function held at the Qatar National Convention Centre yesterday. The graduates included 27 males and 16 females, representing 27 nationalities.

Delivering the keynote address during the convocation ceremony, HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority, thanked Georgetown University for “advancing Qatar’s strategy of building a knowledge economy and society.”

He also thanked HH the Emir  Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, for “their leadership for making Qatar home for a renowned world-class institution such as GU-Qatar.”

Referring to the Class of 2013, Gerd Nonneman, Dean of GU-Q noted: “The Class of 2013 represents some of the best examples of our values in action. They are forever bonded - as classmates, as graduates and as alumni of the thriving Georgetown community. I am really proud of their accomplishments and look forward to the wonderful contributions that each of them will make to better our world.”

During the Tropaia award ceremony held earlier in the week, AlJawhara Hassan al-Thani, a culture and politics major, was recognised for receiving the prestigious Abu Hamid al-Ghazali Award, which is given to a student by the GU-Q faculty, as well as the  Dean’s Medal, which honours the student with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA).

Malik Habayeb, who graduated with a degree in international politics, was honoured as the recipient of the International Politics Outstanding Student Award.

AlJawhara and Eilin Francis, an international economics major, both of whom graduated with honours, were previously recognised for being chosen as HBKU President’s Award recipients this year, a prestigious award that recognises six Education City campus students who have demonstrated academic excellence and have made significant contributions to their communities.

John J. DeGioia, president of Georgetown University in Washington DC, conferred the degrees to the graduating class, and congratulated them for the successful completion of years of hard work and effort.

The GU-Q graduating Class of 2013 will join the 125 graduates who have already walked in the commencement ceremonies since the Georgetown branch campus was established in Education City in 2005.
