HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani watching the Emir Cup final between Al Sadd and Lekhwiya at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium last night.
There are straightforward wins and then there are those where a team pulls off a great turnaround and produces a win that remain etched in the memories of players and fans alike for long.
Lekhwiya came from a goal down to defeat El Jaish 2-1 and set up a final clash with Al Sadd in the 2016 Emir Cup. Goals from Nam Tae-Hee and Mohamed Musa helped cancel out Abderrazzak Hamedallah’s early strike and give Djamel Belmadi’s boys a deserving victory.
Al Rayyan’s sudden loss of form could make for an interesting case study. After winning the Qatar Stars League with five matches to spare, they have rather mysteriously gone off the boil, their defeat to Lekhwiya in the Qatar Cup semi-finals on Sunday compounding their misery.
Lekhwiya rounded off their Qatar Stars League season with a 2-1 win over bottom side Mesaimeer yesterday. Lekhwiya had already sealed fourth place and yesterday’s victory only helped them bag three points without any improvement in their position.
Stumbling Lekhwiya face highflying Al Ahli in round twenty five of the QSL at Al Ahli Stadium today. Lekhwiya will hope to get back to winning ways whilst Al Ahli will be hoping to continue their three-game winning streak.
Al Rayyan have all but confirmed their status as QSL champions for the 2015/2016 season with a 5-0 humbling of second placed Lekhwiya yesterday at Al Sadd stadium.
Current QSL Champions Lekhwiya dropped further points in their title defence yesterday losing 1-0 to Al Arabi in what was a disciplined defensive performance by Gianfranco Zola’s side.
