QP has launched the energy and industry sector’s first-ever “Sustainable Development Industry (SDI) report” for Qatar, which covers the various sustainability initiatives and projects undertaken by stakeholders operating in the country.
Aligned with both the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030) and the National Development Strategy (NDS), some 17 energy and industry stakeholders, in addition to QP, had participated in preparing the report by submitting information on their sustainability initiatives (during 2009-2010) to QP’s HSE regulations and
enforcement directorate.
This summarises the priorities and progress achieved in the energy and industry sector with regard to the implementation of various sustainable development programmes.
The event was held under the patronage and presence of HE the Minister of Energy & Industry, Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada.

The SDI report launch was followed by an appreciation ceremony, during which al-Sada honoured 17 companies with certificates of appreciation.
The companies that were given recognition included Dolphin Energy, Maersk Oil, Nakilat, Occidental Petroleum, Oryx GTL, Qatar Chemical Company, Qatar Fertiliser Company, Qatar Fuel Additives Company, Qatar Petrochemical Company, Qatar Shell, Qatar Vinyl Company, Qatargas, Ras Girtas Power Company, RasGas, Seef, Total E&P Qatar, and Wintershall
Holding.
In his keynote address, al-Sada stressed the importance of the report as another strategic milestone for Qatar’s energy and industry sector.
“Through sustainability reporting, energy and industry stakeholders can demonstrate their commitment to the long-term growth and development of the sector while ensuring the alignment of their operations with QNV 2030 and the NDS 2011-2016,”
he said.
The minister expressed his gratitude to the companies for their “dedication and contributions” to the SDI report, and stressed that all operators and companies working in the energy and industry sector should submit their own sustainable development report by 2012.
In 2012, the HSE regulations and enforcement directorate will launch a verification and ranking scheme for awarding prospective organisations for their noteworthy SD programmes based on these SD reports. The directorate will continue supporting industry operators through the sharing of good practices and further develop the SD industry guidelines in order to fill the gaps that become apparent while implementing the SD guidelines.
In addition to the senior officials of the 17 companies, also present at the ceremony was Saif Saed al-Naimi, director of QP’s HSE regulations and enforcement directorate, who expressed his gratitude and appreciation to al-Sada for his support to this initiative and his continuous encouragement for all activities related to sustainable
development.
“A reporting timetable will be enhanced over the next five years and will recognise the efforts of all operators via a ranking-and-award system for all the companies that have submitted their reports on time, and this will be implemented for the next reporting period,”
al-Naimi said.
“Moreover, the directorate will also manage this reporting initiative over a longer-term to further enhance the industry’ sustainable development actions and reporting and thereby prove the energy and industry sector’s commitment to achieve the QNV 2030,” he added.
