Volunteers providing information on the dangers of smoking

The Pearl-Qatar (TPQ) has hosted for the second year, American Express’s 2011 ‘quit smoking’ walk-a-thon.
The walk-a-thon route took place around the scenic island and aimed at educating the public about the long-term dangers of smoking. Located on the boardwalk, the special event was carried on from 4pm to 6pm.
Visitors to TPQ were able to test their lung capacity and see how smoking can affect the body.
They were also given information about the effects of smoking and ways to access support for quitting the habit as part of American Express’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.
A spokesperson for United Development Company (UDC), master developer of TPQ, said their support for the ‘quit smoking’ initiative is part of the company’s commitment to CSR and giving back to the community.
“UDC is committed to supporting and encouraging initiatives and programmes that promote a healthy lifestyle for all in Qatar,” the spokesman said. “This event is also an opportunity to take advantage of the wonderful and active environment that is available at The Pearl-Qatar.”
