Thieves have stolen a five-tonne sculpture worth tens of thousands of pounds from the grounds of an art gallery, police said today.
The group managed to wrench the bowl-shaped water feature from the ground outside the Watts Gallery in Guildford.
Police believe they used specialist equipment to remove the sculpture last night.
Detectives today appealed for anyone with information about the theft to speak to them.
Detective Constable Matt Denman, said: “The theft of this unique water feature will have taken some pre-planning and several people with specialist equipment to remove the item from the site, therefore someone will know who is responsible for the theft and I urge them to share this information with us.”
l Two masked burglars held a carving knife to a woman’s throat during a terrifying raid at her east London home.
The 34-year-old victim was threatened by the thugs at her house in Sandringham Road, Barking last night.
She heard the burglars walking up the stairs while she was in her bedroom and as she reached for her phone, they cut the phone line, police said.
She was then forced to hand over her jewellery box before the men fled through the back doors of the house along an alleyway just after 10.45pm.
Police were today hunting two black men, one with “light skin tone and the other dark” in connection with the burglary, Scotland Yard said. The men were wearing dark clothes and scarves covering their faces.
Detective sergeant Kate Stanndard, who is leading the investigation, said:” The effects of becoming a victim of burglary run far deeper than a loss of property.
“This was a vicious and cowardly attack on a woman alone in her own bedroom. I would appeal for anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious on Sandringham Road or who thinks they know the identity of the suspects to come forward.”
