At least 14 people were injured early Saturday when a passenger train derailed in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

Twelve coaches of the Poorva Express went off the tracks in the Kanpur district around 1.30 am (2000 GMT Friday), railways spokesman Amit Malvia said.

The train was travelling from the northern city of Prayagraj to national capital New Delhi.

‘All passengers who were trapped in the coaches were quickly evacuated. Four among those wounded sustained major injuries,’ senior police official Alok Singh told reporters.

Footage on news channels showed at least three coaches had fully overturned and were damaged.

The cause of the derailment was not immediately known and the railways had ordered an inquiry into the accident, Malvia said.

Train traffic on the route would remain affected on Saturday as it would take time to clear the coaches from the tracks.

Accidents are common on India's railway network, which is among the biggest in the world.
