Qatar University College of Pharmacy (CPH) won the best poster award for the clinical pharmacy track at the 7th Kuwait International Pharmacy Conference (KIPC) 2019, organised by Kuwait University Faculty of Pharmacy.
The poster on “Curriculum Mapping and Perspectives of Pharmacy Students on the Development and Implementation of Pharmacist Prescribing in Qatar” was presented by QU-CPH associate professor Dr Ahmed Awaisu.
The presentation was on behalf of a research team from CPH, comprised by: CPH dean Dr Mohamed Diab, assistant dean for Student Affairs Dr Alla El-Awaisi, assistant professor Dr Monica Zollezzi, and pharmacy graduates Rwedah Ali, Wishah El-Khalif and Oraib Abdallah.
The objective of the study was to gauge the prescribing competencies in CPH BSc Pharmacy curriculum through mapping the curriculum against international standards and to determine the perspectives of pharmacy students and recent graduates on the potential of pharmacist prescribing in Qatar. This project is part of a larger project, funded by QU under the National Capacity Building Grant aimed at scoping the development and implementation of pharmacist prescribing in Qatar.
The Pharmacist Prescribing Project will be valuable in generating evidence of the feasibility of implementing pharmacist prescribing in Qatar. It will also help in benchmarking with international competency standards and identifying areas for improving pharmacists’ prescribing competencies in order to fully empower them with the skills to prescribe medicines.
Commenting on the achievement, QU CPH Dean Dr Mohamed Diab said, “No doubt that having representation and presentation at the KIPC 2019 highlights the College of Pharmacy’s international collaborations. It was a great opportunity to share our work abroad and show off our excellence in quality, through competing and winning prizes. This also aligns with the quality of teaching and research that Qatar University adopts, and highlights the extended role of the pharmacist.”
