The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) signed a $5mn deal to strengthen the prevention of violent extremism, on the sidelines of the 140th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly.
The agreement was signed by QFFD Director General Khalifa bin Jassim al-Kuwari and GCERF Executive Director Khalid Koser.
Under the deal, QFFD will support GCERF activities through increasing knowledge of violent extremism and responding to it, helping communities build awareness among leaders on the signs and negative consequences of violent extremism, promoting community engagement in events to promote peace, and providing educational initiatives.
Al-Kuwari said, “This agreement a continuation of QFFD and GCERF partnership for good causes. We are proud of this partnership and are particularly interested in their goals to address the problem of extremism around the world. Today we need to join together to combat the motives of violent extremism so that peace prevails and people enjoy a dignified life.”
He added, “This is in line with the role of Qatar in fighting extremism as the State has continuously renewed its rejection of extremism.”
Koser said, “GCERF is very grateful to Qatar for its continued and substantial support for our mission to boost local communities to become more resilient to the threat of violent extremism.”
He added, “Qatar has been a strong supporter of GCERF since its inception, and has helped nurture the only international organisation dedicated to the prevention of violent extremism. With Qatar’s support, GCERF’s funded projects have reached over 2mn people at risk of radicalisation to violent extremism around the world. The new contribution will build on these initial successes and lessons learned, to widen our impact.” (QNA)
