The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), led by Thomas Weikert of Germany, has chosen Qatar to host the first round of the World Table Tennis Professional Championship, Platinum Class, 2019.
Having hosted the event twice before — in 2016 and 2018 — the decision is a confirmation of the international body’s confidence in Qatar as an organiser.
The ITTF revealed the list of the six countries hosting the Platinum category, which begins in March with the first round, and concludes its competitions in the sixth round in November of the same year.
Qatar will host the first round of professional tournaments — Platinum — next year from March 26 to 31. The 2018 edition, which was held from March 21 to 25, saw a big increase in the prize money totalling USD 230,000, and was attended by 220 players from 43 countries.
Qatar Table Tennis Federation (QTTF) chairman Khalil Ahmed al-Mohannadi, who is also the senior vice president of the International and the Asian confederations, said the decision to choose Qatar as the host of one of the professional platinum tournaments for the third year is a great achievement for the federation and table tennis in the country.
