Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) celebrated and acknowledged the important role family doctors play in the success of Qatar's healthcare system, on the occasion of World Family Doctor Day.
Observed on May 19 every year, World Family Doctor Day highlights the contribution of family doctors in the healthcare systems around the world.
Qatar is ranked 13th worldwide in terms of quality of healthcare and is in line with PHCC's vision to be Qatar's primary healthcare provider of choice. Family doctors play a vital role in achieving this objective.
Since the establishment of Family Medicine Residency Training Programme in 1995, there are 46 senior consultants, 24 specialists and currently there are 53 doctors in the programme.
The objective is to graduate highly competent and up-to-date qualified family physicians who are confident to lead the healthcare system in Qatar providing continuous, evidence-based and high healthcare service standards for all patients.
As part of strengthening the leadership and knowledge of family doctors, PHCC has established a strong partnership with other healthcare providers in Qatar such as HMC, Sidra Medicine and Aspetar to improve and deliver the best patient care.
There is also a strong partnership with Qatar University and Weill Cornell Medicine - Qatar to equip the future doctors of Qatar with all the necessary knowledge and opportunity.
Family doctors play an important part in the society, as through their personal and professional knowledge and established relationship with the patient, they are often the first point of contact for any medical advice.
On the occasion of World Family Doctor Day, the newly opened health centres of Muaither and Al Wajba offered a tour of the premises to government corporations and local schools. PHCC brought awareness to the family medicine programme available at PHCC with activities, gifts and information for those who visited the stand.
There was a staff event in Doha Marriot that presented the opportunity to mark achievements, recognise efforts and developments within themselves.
Dr Muna Taher, programme director for Family Medicine Residency Programme, said, “Family doctors have a vital role in harnessing their personal and professional skills to build trusting relationships with patients and raise awareness by offering guidance on how to best overcome daily hindrances and live a healthy lifestyle. Our doctors are trained to deliver high quality healthcare by applying best practice.”
