As it has done each May for many years, Doha College unveiled wondrous pieces of art produced by its students, at its annual visual arts exhibition recently. The event aims to showcase the creative fine art, photography media and design technology work created by students, which included paintings, fashion and textile design, film, 3D and product design, photography, sketching and other creations in a variety of media. The exhibits were the result of the inspiration and hard work of (I)GCSE and A-Level students, and are due to be assessed by the chief moderator for Art and Design from Pearson.
The exhibition was honoured to welcome Sabah Arbilli, renowned artist and calligrapher, who has shown his calligraphy based artworks in the Middle East, Europe, Russia, Turkey, Australia and throughout the world. He was impressed with the breadth of subjects and how the young students’ art projected them.
Joshua Carr, Year 13 student, who will be heading to Leeds University, commented about his photography project, “There are hundreds of photos behind these five images that made it through to the exhibited piece, and to be able to express them for people to see is fantastic.” Connie Morrison, also in Year 13, added, “We have all worked so hard over the past two years, and it’s quite useful to hear other people’s comments about our pieces.”
Dr Steffen Sommers, Principal of Doha College, shared his impressions about the exhibition and said, “I am moved to the core by the talent and dedication of our students. The preparation that went into the concepts, the exceptionally detailed crafting and the inspired presentation belies their young age.”
It is the second year Doha College has been supported with the art event thanks to the InterContinental Doha the City Hotel, who provided delicious canapes and refreshments to all guests. Some of last year’s exhibition pieces were also displayed at the hotel, which gave students a real idea of how artistic expression could be incorporated into business.
Ferhan Khan, Head of Art and Photography at Doha College, was justifiably proud of the event. “The works on display spanned a vast range of mediums, and all form part of the pupils assessed coursework and examination portfolios for (I)GCSE and A-Levels. Once again, this year’s exhibition drew in a big crowd of parents, students, and other schools, as well as Axel Wabenhorst, Australian Ambassador to Qatar, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.”
Doha College offers courses in art, photography, product design, product design textiles and media from (I)GCSE through to A-Level. Many previous students, who studied these subjects at Doha College, have been, over the years, accepted to top universities worldwide, including The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Yale University, USA and the University of British Columbia, Canada.
