Dr Mahmoud al-Mahmoud, director of Muaither Sports Club, was the chief guest on the occasion and the ambassador introduced the players to him.
“There are about 20,000 Ethiopians currently working in Qatar. They all have been working hard for months to make the programme successful. We had a number of meetings and the embassy and the community have been working in tandem to work out the modalities of the event,” explained Woldegiorgis.
“We have a number of sports activities, including athletics for children and several other games for elders. About 10 football teams have been engaged in a tournament for the last two months,” continued the envoy.
The ambassador also revealed that a band from Ethiopia flew into Qatar to perform on the occasion. The band, consisting of 50 members, played some beautiful music and showcased many cultural performances that went on into late evening.
“We have also some journalists who have come all the way from Ethiopia to report the event. We have the crew from two television stations who are telecasting the event live from here to Ethiopia. It is the fifth annual event so far and we expect to continue it for the community in the coming years,” added the envoy.
