Qatar Institute for Speech and Hearing (QISH) will be conducting an ‘Autism Walkathon – A Walk against Stigma’ tomorrow (April 13) at the Lake Area of Aspire Park as part of the World Autism Awareness Day.
According to QISH, group of school students from arabic and non-arabic schools across Qatar, teachers, social workers, special educators, parents, doctors, allied health professionals, special needs centres, public associations, VIPs and residents will take part in “this great event to spread the awareness on autism.”
The World Autism Awareness Day was first proposed by the United Nations (UN) representative from Qatar and the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser in 2007.
Supported by all member states and adopted in 2008, the event is internationally observed every April 2 to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life and those with autism, “so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.”
QISH, the pioneer institute for special needs services in Doha, conducted several activities recently as part of observing this day and holding on to the theme proposed by the UN for the World Autism Awareness Day 2018, ‘Empowering Women and Girls with Autism.’
For two days, entire building under QISH group such as QISH, QISH RehabilitationCentre, QISH Medical and QISH Wakrah was lit up in blue colour and staff wore blue shirts with printed message to support the mission of this day.
Cultural programmes and fun activities were held for the children while parents have been briefed and oriented on how to take care and support children with autism.
