The General Directorate of Traffic has tracked down a motorist who had fatally run over a child and fled the spot, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) reported yesterday.
The motorist has been referred to the competent authorities for legal action.
Security services had received a report about an accident, in which a pedestrian was hit in the Muraikh area on a road heading east, and that the condition of the victim was critical, the MoI said in a statement.
Traffic patrols and an ambulance were immediately rushed to the spot to investigate the accident and rescue the injured. On reaching the site of the incident, the security personnel found that the victim was a nine-year-old child who had died immediately on being hit by a car, the statement noted.
The security officers then began asking those present at the spot about the circumstances of the accident and the motorist involved. They, however, did not get clear answers about the driver who caused the accident and escaped.
The traffic patrols and security personnel then reviewed footage from a surveillance camera installed in a residential complex overlooking the road where the accident occurred. Also, an eyewitness was also able to identify – from the CCTV footage – the car that hit the child.
The motorist was then tracked down and, on being confronted with witness testimonies and camera recordings, he confessed to the authorities that he had caused the accident.
The motorist was then referred to the competent authorities for further legal procedures, the MoI added.
