The first phase of Qatar's QR14.5bn Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project, which can store as much as 1,500mn gallons of water in 15 reservoirs, is expected to be ready in the first half of this year.
HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani was briefed about the project, the biggest of its kind in the world, by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) president and senior engineer Issa bin Hilal al-Kuwari on Thursday.
The Prime Minister appreciated the ongoing works during a visit to to one of the sites under the project in Al Thumama. Al-Kuwari thanked the Prime Minister for his consistent support and encouragement. 
"The visit reflected how much the state is concerned about uninterrupted water supply and how vital is the water sector is for ensuring food security for the country's residents," al-Kuwari said in a statement.

The Kahramaa chief said the corporation is executing all its projects on schedule, strictly adhering to the international quality and standards, and in line with the directives of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.
The projects underway will ensure enough water for drinking and for irrigation purposes, the Kahramaa president said, adding the mega reservoirs are being set up in Umm Slal, Umm Baraka, Rawdet Rashid, Abu Nakhla and Al Thumama.
Each of the 15 reservoirs will have the capacity to store 100mn gallons of water. The Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project is expected to be adequate to meet the growing requirements of the country until 2026.
The roof portion of the reservoirs are to be equipped with solar panels to generate 200mw of energy. Pipelines of approximately 650km are also being laid to connect the reservoirs with points of water supply.
More than 55% of the works of the reservoir projects are handled by Qatari companies and nearly 92mn man hours have been completed so far without any accident. About 24,000 people are currently engaged in the construction.
