Leading Indian stand-up comedian Amit Tandon on Friday night left his audience in fits of laughter with his satirical and funny anecdotes at the Radisson Blu hotel.
Tandon, who has made his mark as an established stand-up comedian, amused people of all ages at the hotel’s Giwana Ballroom. The venue was opened to the public at 7pm and the show started at 8pm.
The elegant gathering included people of all ages and professions. Women and young people seemed to enjoy Tandon’s jokes more, frequently bursting into laughter and even hooting and whistling.
Indian ambassador P Kumaran also attended the show.
As Tandon started his performance, he asked the audience, “Are there people in the gathering from Gujrat in India.” When many people raised their hands, he said, “The majority of hands are raised in the back. They have purchased cheaper tickets.”
The ensuing laughter set the tone for the rest of the show.
The comedian then started sharing jokes and stories about people from Gujrat. Observations surrounding their spending and business habits formed the bulk of his anecdotes.
The comedian, who comes from a Punjabi middle class family, switched to his native state. This time, he zeroed in on their extravagant and showy lifestyles. Sharing stories mostly about his family, Tandon entertained the audience with jokes on about how Punjabis socialise, shop, dine out, raise and treat their children, attend wedding parties, how they brag and boast of their family backgrounds, and how they show off their wealth.
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) were up next, as Tandon cracked jokes about what their relatives back in India expect from them as gifts and what they take instead.
The funniest part of the show was when the comedian started analysing marital relationships and the role children play in a family. The audience burst into hysterical laughter as he started caricaturing subdued husbands and dominating wives.
He shared many stories about his family, highlighting in a funny way the habits and actions of his mother, father, wife, teenage daughter and son.
“I really enjoyed his jokes about how children irritate their parents and how the parents respond. I also enjoyed his remarks about people obsessed with social media networking, especially WhatsApp and Facebook,” said Samit Varman, a student of Grade VIII.
He said, “There were some jokes that I did not understand. I had to ask my mother sitting next to me. She would explain the jokes and I would laugh. Overall, it was easy to get his jokes as he was mainly speaking in English. My mom is a big admirer of the comedian and I am happy I came here.”
“As promised in his earlier interview with Community, Amit has brought a lot of laughter to South Asian expatriates in Doha. The audience really enjoyed the puns and jokes of the comedian,” said Rashmi Kotriwala, founder of Top Hat Entertainment, the company that organised the show.
She said, “Everyone enjoyed our first-ever show in Qatar and we got the response that we had been expecting. The presence of the Indian ambassador was a great honour for us. He congratulated us for conducting a successful show here and bringing together expatriate families.”
She added, “Amit is also very happy and satisfied. He is happy because the audience enjoyed his show and responded well to his jokes.”
At the end of the show, fans of all ages crowded around Amit to take autographs and selfies.
Earlier, the show started with short performances by two Indian expatriate comedians living in Qatar. The audience also enjoyed their jokes, which dealt with expatriate life and extroverts and introverts.
