The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) said that it has recorded several serious violations committed against Qatari students by educational institutions in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain, which have cut diplomatic ties and imposed an illegal blockade on Qatar.
The Committee said in a statement that the arbitrary measures taken by these countries, especially UAE, violate all human rights norms, principles and charters resulting in serious violations of a range of civil, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to education, the Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.
The NHRC said the unjust siege has affected the right of the Qatari students to education and has deprived them of the exercise and enjoyment of this right, as stipulated in international human rights instruments.
The statement noted that these violations include not allowing Qatari students to complete exams at the end of the academic year, refusing to give them certificates of graduation, closing their educational accounts as well as terminating their registration arbitrarily without giving reasons.
The NHRC said it has presented a series of complaints to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
The Committee called on the universities and educational institutions in the three countries to put aside political differences and take into account the rights of Qatari students and not to put obstacles on their right to education.
It said said that it would take up the issue with all relevant international organisations and accredited institutions.
The NHRC statement expressed the confidence that all governmental bodies and institutions in Qatar, led by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Qatar University, will quickly find alternative solutions for these students and exempt them from certain conditions and restrictions in order to preserve their rights and future.
