Sultan Mohamed V was installed yesterday as Malaysia’s 15th king in an official ceremony involving Malay royal customs at the country’s National Palace.
The ceremony marks the formal commencement of the king’s tenure, after his reign began in December of last year.
Among those present at the ceremony were Prime Minister Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi and Brunei’s Crown Prince, Malaysia’s Bernama news agency reported.
During the ceremony, Sultan Mohamed V accepted the federal kris, a symbol of power and authority.
The 47-year-old then delivered an address where he urged Malaysians to show unity and tolerance.
“I hope Malaysians will continue to be united, adopt a give-and-take attitude in bearing the responsibility of a sovereign state because these are our unique features which have been our source of strength,” Bernama cited the new king as saying.
Malaysia practices a unique type of constitutional monarchy system involving elected kings who change every five years.
