An exhibition by the Sudanese artist Islam Kamel has opened at Cultural Village Foundation-Katara and reflects the artist’s silence over a period that lasted for six years.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti in the presence of Sudanese ambassador Dr Yasser Khalaf Allah Khadir and a large-number of media personnel.
The 41 drawings of mixed media and acrylic will continue to be on until the May 5, from 10am to 10pm.
The exhibition opened with a Sudanese band playing African music, while the assembled dignitaries and audience admired the drawings on display.
Speaking on the occasion, Katara GM Dr al-Sulaiti exuded gratitude and appreciation to the Sudanese artist for providing a glimpse of rich Sudanese culture and tradition, noting that some of the drawings represent ancient times that date back to 6,000 years ago.
In an official statement, the Sudanese artist said, “My silence invaded every colour, every frame and across time. It’s the voice of silence which haunted me for a long time. Through it, I saw the deepness of colour and word. I sought tranquillity, to both calm and inspire my senses.”
Islam Kamel expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Katara for offering a platform to showcase talents.
Ambassador Khadir said, “Today as we inaugurate this heart-warming exhibition, it is a confirmation of the fact that the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara strives to combine diversified cultures under one cultural hub. This exhibition Islam Kamel beautifully illustrates the Sudanese civilisation through the characters and the choice of colours used.”
The artist is a member of both the Qatar Fine Arts Association and the Sudanese Fine Arts Association. He has conducted many exhibitions around the globe, including in the Gulf region, and in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
